Good dental health is essential to the general health, well being, quality, and longevity of your dog's life.  Regular checkups help us and you keep track of your dog's dental health.

Sulphur Springs Veterinary Clinic recommends:

  • Brushing your dog's teeth on a regular basis using toothbrushes and toothpaste specially designed for dogs.

  • Bring your dog to the clinic for regular professional cleanings.  With your pet under light general anesthesia we can clean his teeth, including areas under the gum line, and remove tarter and plaque . Pfizer Animal Health.

  • Give your dog appropriate chew toys.

  • Feed a dog food that will help remove plaque between cleanings.

Periodontal disease is the most common disease among dogs.  Some breeds are more prone to periodontal disease than others.  It is important that you know if your dog is one of the disease prone breeds.  If so you need to pay particular attention to his dental health.

Watch for these symptoms of periodontal disease:

  • Bad breath (an early sign of periodontal disease)
  • Red swollen gums
  • Yellowish crust near the gum line
  • Loose or missing teeth
  • Discomfort when the mouth or gums are touched
  • Decreased appetite or weight loss due to difficulty chewing
Periodontal disease is an inflammation or infection of the gums and bone around your dog's teeth.  Left untreated your dog can lose teeth and/or suffer infections in other parts of the body including but not limited to liver disease and damage, kidney disease, and even inflammation of the brain.  These conditions can be fatal.

Pfizer Animal Health has recently introduced a vaccine which is useful in dogs for prevention as well treatment of Periodontitis.  The vaccine is called Prophyromonas Denticanis-Gulae-Salivosa Bactrin.  This vaccine, along with good dental care can keep your dog happy and healthy through his life. The vaccine can be given to dogs 7 weeks of age and older.  It is beneficial even for dogs that already have periodontal disease.

Call us to make an appointment to bring your dog for evaluation and treatment with Pfizer's vaccine. Be sure to ask us about the dental vaccine.
